QuotableFrance has been a Hague Apostille member since 1965 and accepts Thai documents bearing the MFA Thailand Apostille issued since 28 February 2027. Every document filed with a French Mairie, Préfecture, Tribunal Judiciaire or France-Visas/TLScontact must be translated by a traducteur assermenté listed by a Cour d'Appel. NYC Legal completes Thai certified translation, MFA Apostille and France-side sworn re-translation coordination in five to seven business days from THB 3,500.

France Authority Requirements

Since Thailand's Hague Apostille accession enters into force on 28 February 2027, every French Mairie (city hall), Préfecture, OFII (Office Français de l'Immigration et de l'Intégration), Tribunal Judiciaire and France-Visas/TLScontact centre accepts a single MFA Thailand Apostille instead of the legacy double-stamp French Embassy legalisation. The Embassy of France in Bangkok formally discontinued légalisation for documents bearing the new Apostille on the same date. NYC Legal handles every step inside Thailand: Ministry of Justice court-listed translator certification (compliant with Code de procédure civile Art. 23 and CESEDA Art. R.431-10 translation evidentiary value), MFA Department of Consular Affairs Apostille submission via the e-Authentication portal, and a quality-control review against the destination Mairie or Préfecture checklist. France additionally requires that translations submitted to the Mairie for marriage publication (publication des bans under Code civil Art. 63), to OFII for the Contrat d'Intégration Républicaine, or to the Préfecture for titre de séjour be produced by a traducteur assermenté inscribed on a Cour d'Appel list — we coordinate parallel French-side sworn translation via partner traducteurs assermentés at Cour d'Appel de Paris, Lyon and Marseille when the destination authority insists on a France-issued sworn translation. For long-stay visa (VLS-TS) applications via France-Visas, the MFA Apostille satisfies authentication; TLScontact in Bangkok accepts the document set without further legalisation since the Convention's entry into force.

Validity window: French Mairies accept Thai civil-status documents apostilled within 6 months of submission per the Instruction Générale Relative à l'État Civil (IGREC) §§556-560. The Préfecture and OFII accept up to 12 months. Police clearance and single-status must be ≤3 months old at submission to TLScontact / France-Visas.

End-to-End Apostille Pipeline (France)

  1. 1. Document intake & checklist match
We confirm the Mairie or Préfecture's published list (varies between Paris 1er, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Toulouse) and whether traducteur assermenté is required additionally to the Thai certified translation.
  2. 2. Certified Thai → French translation
Court-listed translator (Ministry of Justice roster) certifies the translation, attaching a Translator's Affidavit acceptable under Code de procédure civile Art. 23 evidentiary rules.
  3. 3. MFA Apostille — Department of Consular Affairs
Submitted electronically. Normal 3 business days; same-day express for THB 800 surcharge. Apostille format compliant with 1961 Convention Annex.
  4. 4. French Cour d'Appel sworn re-translation (if required)
Where the Mairie or Préfecture demands a French-issued sworn translation, we courier the apostilled original to a partner traducteur assermenté near Cour d'Appel de Paris or Lyon (5-7 business day round trip).
  5. 5. Quality-control review
Names cross-checked against passport MRZ to prevent IGREC publication-des-bans rejection. Accents and ç verified per French civil-status orthography rules.
  6. 6. Delivery
EMS to French address (5-8 business days) or DHL Express (2-3 days). Original retained in NYC escrow on request for later OFII or naturalisation use.

Common Pitfalls We Eliminate

Cour d'Appel sworn translator list — Mairie checks
Many Mairies cross-check the traducteur assermenté name against the Cour d'Appel public roster (annuaires.justice.gouv.fr). Using a self-described 'sworn' translator not on a Cour d'Appel list is a guaranteed refusal.
Accent and diacritic handling
Thai names romanised without accents are accepted by Préfectures but Mairies often request a phonetic French rendering for état civil registration. We supply both transliterations on a single page to avoid the Mairie rewriting the document.
IGREC 6-month rule
The Instruction Générale Relative à l'État Civil §556 caps usability of foreign civil-status documents at 6 months from issuance for publication des bans. We time issuance to the planned wedding date.
TLScontact 'still legalise' rumour
TLScontact Bangkok front-desk staff occasionally repeat outdated instructions. Since 14 Dec 2024 the MFA Apostille is conclusive; we provide the France-Visas reference circular if challenged.

FAQ — France Apostille

Is French Embassy legalisation still required?

No. From 28 February 2027 France accepts the MFA Thailand Apostille directly. The Embassy of France in Bangkok has discontinued légalisation for apostilled Thai documents under Hague Convention Article 3. Every Mairie, Préfecture, OFII, Tribunal Judiciaire and France-Visas / TLScontact centre treats the MFA Apostille as conclusive authentication. Paying for embassy legalisation in addition is wasted money.

Do I still need a traducteur assermenté in France?

Usually yes for state-civil and immigration filings. The Mairie (publication des bans), Préfecture (titre de séjour) and OFII (CIR) consistently require translation by a traducteur assermenté listed by a Cour d'Appel. The Thai court-listed translator certification covers visa submission at TLScontact and France-Visas, but French in-country authorities almost always demand a France-issued sworn translation.

What is the validity window of a Thai single-status certificate?

French Mairies cap acceptance at 6 months from issuance under Instruction Générale Relative à l'État Civil §556. For publication des bans, the Mairie typically requires the certificate to be ≤3 months old at posting; the bans then run for 10 days. We time issuance, MFA Apostille and sworn translation to land within the Mairie's window.

Can I transcribe a Thai marriage at the Mairie or via the Service Central d'État Civil?

Both. For a Thai-Thai marriage involving one French spouse, transcription is filed with the Service Central d'État Civil in Nantes under Art. 171-5 Code civil. For two French nationals married in Thailand, the SCEC in Nantes is mandatory. The apostilled and sworn-translated Thai Kor.Ror.3 is the core document; processing is typically 6-9 months.

Does France verify the MFA Apostille digitally?

Yes. Cour d'Appel registries and the Bureau des Légalisations at the French MFA verify Thai Apostilles via the e-Register at consular.mfa.go.th/eapostille (QR or Apostille number lookup). Préfectures and Mairies typically rely on document inspection but can escalate verification to the Bureau des Légalisations within 48 hours.

What about naturalisation under Art. 21-15 Code civil?

The MFA Apostille is required on every Thai supporting document (birth, marriage, divorce, family registration, police clearance) submitted with the demande de naturalisation. The Préfecture additionally requires French-side sworn translation. We coordinate the full bundle including a sworn re-translation in Paris that the Plateforme Naturalisations Rezé reliably accepts.

Source documents commonly apostilled together for France

Apostille certifies the seal/signature on a Thai-issued document so France authorities will accept it. Two of the most common source documents are the Thai Police Clearance Certificate (PCSC) and the Thai marriage certificate (Kor.Ror.2/3) — both must be issued first, then routed through MFA for Apostille.

Compliant sequence under the Hague Apostille Convention (Thailand acceded 14 Dec 2024): issue the source document → certified translation by an MoJ-listed sworn translator → Notary Public → MFA Department of Consular Affairs Apostille.

Regulatory updates for France 2025–2026

  • France is a Hague Apostille member — Thai docs via MFA can carry Apostille (Thailand joined 15 Dec 2025), saving 3–7 days vs. Consular Legalization.
  • MFA Consular (Chaeng Watthana) accepts online booking only from Jan 2026 — reserve e-service in advance.
  • Accepting authority in France: Mairie / Préfecture.
  • France requires traducteur assermenté + Certificat de coutume — file at the Mairie 10 days in advance.

Common mistakes that trigger rejection

  1. Using freelance translators not on the MoJ/MFA registry — France refuses on sight.
  2. Name/place spelling mismatches with the passport — always cross-check.
  3. Original documents older than 6 months — some countries require ≤ 3 months.
  4. Filing Consular Legalization when France accepts Apostille — wastes 5–10 days and duplicate fees.

Anonymized micro case

A client prepared docs for France themselves and was refused because the translator was off-registry and the MFA step was missing. NYCLI (DBD 0435567000061) re-translated via MoJ-registered translators, filed MFA + Apostille, cleared in 5-7 วันทำการ — accepted first pass.
