Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the Ministry of Foreign Affairs step?
No. The Chinese mission certifies the signature of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, not the original issuing office, so a document that has not been legalised at the Department of Consular Affairs will be refused at the counter. The order of the chain cannot be rearranged.
Which Chinese characters should my name use?
Use the characters that already appear on your existing Chinese documents — residence permit, prior contracts, school records. Introducing a new transliteration creates an identity mismatch that the receiving body in China will question even when the Thai document itself is perfect.
How long does the whole chain take?
Seven to fourteen working days is typical, but queue length at the mission is the main variable and public holidays on either calendar extend it. For a hard deadline we work backwards from your date and start the Thai layers early so only the embassy step remains at the end.
Does this apply to Hong Kong and Macau?
