Frequently asked questions
Can I ship my car?
Legally yes, but import duty, excise and VAT combined can reach 200–300% of the vehicle's assessed value, so it is almost never economical. Most expats sell at origin and buy locally; the exception is a returning Thai national or a diplomat with a duty exemption.
Can I bring my dog/cat?
Yes. You need a veterinary health certificate issued within 10 days of travel, a rabies vaccination given at least 30 days before entry, an ISO microchip, and an import permit from the Department of Livestock Development. Full-service relocation agents handle the paperwork and quarantine liaison for THB 12,000–25,000.
Can I import on a tourist visa?
No. The duty-free household effects allowance requires a non-immigrant visa valid for one year or more, or a work permit. On a tourist visa your shipment is treated as a commercial import and assessed at full duty plus 7% VAT, which usually exceeds the value of the goods.
Air vs sea freight?
Under about 50 kg and urgent, use air (3–7 days). A full household of furniture goes by sea (25–45 days door to door). Most families split the shipment: documents, laptops and clothing by air, then beds, sofas and appliances by sea container.
What items are prohibited?
Weapons and ammunition, narcotics, pornography, counterfeit branded goods, e-cigarettes and vaping devices, and certain protected wildlife products. Drones over 250 g need NBTC registration and CAAT permission. Declare medicines with controlled ingredients and carry the original prescription to avoid seizure at customs.
