Opening a Thai Bank Account as a Foreigner
Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank, SCB, Krungsri — which one is easiest and what documents you need
Foreigners can open Thai bank accounts — required: Non-Immigrant Visa (B/O/Retirement/LTR/DTV) + work permit or Certificate of Residence + passport. Tourist visa is possible at select branches (Bangkok Bank Sukhumvit Soi 33, Kasikorn Robinson Sukhumvit) but increasingly hard. ATM card issued immediately, internet banking + mobile app immediate, annual fees THB 200–500. Recommended: Kasikorn K-eSavings (no annual fee, PromptPay supported).

Frequently asked questions
Can I open on a tourist visa?
Some branches will, notably Bangkok Bank and selected Kasikorn branches, usually with a Certificate of Residence or an embassy letter. Policy varies by branch manager and has tightened since 2023, so bring your lease, TM30 and proof of address. NYC's introduction service costs THB 4,500.
Which bank has the best mobile app?
Kasikorn's K PLUS has the most complete English interface, SCB Easy has the cleanest design and fastest onboarding, Bangkok Bank's Bualuang is dated but very stable for international transfers, and Krungsri KMA is the strongest for multi-currency holdings. Most expats keep Kasikorn or SCB as the daily driver.
Can I hold USD/EUR in Thailand?
Yes, through a Foreign Currency Deposit account at Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn or SCB. Interest is nominal at 0.1–0.5% and maintenance runs THB 800–1,500 a year, but an FCD lets you hold sale proceeds or salary in USD or EUR and convert when the rate suits you.
Can I deposit/withdraw USD at ATMs?
No. Thai ATMs dispense baht only, and foreign-card withdrawals carry a THB 220 fee per transaction on top of your home bank's charges. Foreign-currency notes must be deposited over the counter at a branch, with your passport and, for large sums, evidence of source.
How do I close an account?
Visit a branch of the same bank with your passport, passbook and ATM card. Closure is free, takes about 15 minutes, and any remaining balance is paid in cash or transferred. Settle standing orders first, and keep the closure slip if you may need to prove the account is gone.
