Standard Thai health cover pays for outpatient visits, inpatient admission, surgery and emergency treatment inside the insurer's network. Cosmetic procedures, fertility treatment including IVF, most alternative medicine and experimental therapies sit outside the benefit schedule. Complex or specialist cases are commonly referred onward to a university hospital such as Siriraj or Chulalongkorn under the same referral rules.

Thai social security covers the insured employee only; a spouse and children are not automatically included. Families usually add a private policy for dependants, or register non-employed relatives under the voluntary Section 40 scheme, which offers several low-cost benefit packages with a modest monthly contribution but far narrower medical coverage than an employer-based Section 33 registration.

Combining the two is common and usually the most economical structure. Social security is used first at your registered hospital, and a private top-up policy then covers what the state scheme does not: a private room, treatment outside the registered hospital, a second opinion, additional specialist consultations and higher surgical limits. Tell both providers so the claims are coordinated correctly.
