Medical Treatment Visa (Non-MT) — Medical Care in Thailand

Accompanying persons are allowed under the Non-Immigrant MT category. A spouse, parent, child or sibling may apply as the patient's companion, and the number of companions granted is set by the embassy or Immigration office handling the case. You must show proof of the family relationship, legalised or apostilled and translated, together with the hospital letter naming the companion.

Unlimited as long as you show ongoing medical need + receipts + updated hospital letter / cancer/dialysis cases run 5+ years.

In-country conversion from a Tourist visa or exemption stamp to Non-Immigrant MT is generally possible at Immigration, provided enough permitted stay remains. You submit a letter from a hospital licensed for medical treatment stating the diagnosis and expected treatment period, payment receipts or a deposit confirmation, and the standard change-of-visa fee. Processing commonly takes two to three weeks.

The Non-Immigrant MT visa is issued strictly for medical treatment and does not authorise employment in Thailand, including remote work for a foreign employer. If you intend to keep working while you are here, the appropriate routes are the Destination Thailand Visa for remote workers or the Long-Term Resident visa for work-from-Thailand professionals.

Health insurance and visa costs are entirely separate. A policy pays for treatment according to its schedule of benefits, but the visa application fee, extension fees, re-entry permits and legalisation of supporting documents are never reimbursed. What insurance does provide is the coverage certificate that several Thai visa categories require as an eligibility condition.
