Bank statements for use abroad

Back-dated account statements are the financial evidence embassies and universities request most often. What usually fails is not the balance but the format, the bank officer's signature and a translation that must match the original line by line.

A bank statement is issued by the bank to the account holder and lists deposits, withdrawals and the running balance for a stated period. Most receiving bodies want the branch-issued version carrying the bank's stamp and an officer's signature rather than a self-printed app export, because the branch copy can be traced back to an authorised bank signatory.

How many months you must show is not set by Thai law; it is set by whoever receives the document — an embassy, a university or the destination country's immigration authority. Read the receiving body's current published requirement before you go to the branch so you do not have to request the document twice.

Where the document will be used in a non-Thai-speaking country, the translation must be complete and exact: every figure, every date and the account name must match the original. If the receiving body requires a legalised translation, it goes to the Department of Consular Affairs, and for some countries onward to that country's embassy in Bangkok.

If the account holder cannot attend in person, the bank requires a power of attorney it accepts, because banks owe a confidentiality duty under the Financial Institutions Business Act B.E. 2551 (2008). A power of attorney signed abroad is usually signed before a Royal Thai Embassy officer or another authority competent to certify signatures in that country.

Documents to prepare

Step order

  1. Confirm the receiving body's requirement: period covered, language and whether legalisation is needed
  2. Request the statement at the branch with the bank's stamp and officer signature
  3. Prepare a translation that matches every figure and date in the original
  4. If a legalised translation is required, file it with the Department of Consular Affairs
  5. Where the destination country requires it, obtain endorsement at that country's embassy in Bangkok
  6. Keep copies of every certification layer in case the receiving body asks to verify

Frequently asked questions

How many months of statements do I need?

Thai law does not set this. The receiving body does — an embassy, a university or the destination country's immigration authority. Follow that body's current published requirement.

Is an app-printed statement acceptable?

It depends on the receiver. Many require the branch-issued version with the bank stamp and an officer's signature, because that copy traces back to an authorised bank signatory.

Where is the translation legalised?

Where legalisation is required, the translation is filed with the Department of Consular Affairs, and some countries then require endorsement at their embassy in Bangkok.

Can someone collect the statement for me?

Yes, with a power of attorney on the bank's accepted form. Banks owe a customer confidentiality duty under the Financial Institutions Business Act B.E. 2551 (2008).

Does the Apostille already apply to financial documents?

Thailand deposited its accession on 30 June 2026; the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 per HCCH. Until then the existing chain applies.

What is the minimum balance?

Any minimum is set by the destination authority, not by a Thai bank or the Department of Consular Affairs. Read that authority's own notice, as thresholds are revised periodically.

A large transfer arrived shortly before filing — is that a problem?

Receivers often ask about the source of funds. Prepare supporting evidence such as a sale agreement, a salary certificate or asset-sale documents.

Can I use a joint account?

Yes where the receiver accepts joint accounts. State clearly whose names the document is issued in and be ready to explain the relationship between the joint holders.
