Who needs a work permit

Any foreigner performing 'work' in Thailand needs a permit — even unpaid volunteering, board meetings, or remote consulting from Thai soil. Only specific exemptions exist for diplomatic staff, UN agencies, and BOI-promoted companies (which use e-Expert fast-track).

Employer requirements

Your Thai employer must have: ฿2M paid-up registered capital per foreign employee, 4 Thai employees per foreigner, and clean tax/social-security records. Foreign-majority companies face stricter ฿3M-per-foreigner requirement.

Document checklist

From you: passport (with valid Non-B visa), degree certificate (apostilled + translated), CV, recent photos (3×4cm), HIV/syphilis medical certificate. From employer: BOI cert (if applicable), company registration (DBD), VAT registration, financial statements, social security ID, employment contract.

Can I switch jobs without leaving Thailand?

Yes, since the 2017 Royal Decree relaxation. Your outgoing employer files a work permit cancellation at the Department of Employment, and your incoming employer then submits a fresh application within 15 calendar days. Your existing Non-Immigrant B visa stamp remains valid during the gap, and Immigration only requires an in-country visa transfer once the new WP is issued.

Does my degree need an Apostille?

Yes. All foreign academic credentials — bachelor's, master's, PhD, professional certificates — must be authenticated before submission to the Thai Ministry of Labour and Immigration. Use an Apostille if the issuing country is a Hague Convention member, or full Thai-embassy legalisation if not, then have the legalised credential sworn-translated into Thai by a registered translator.

Can I work for multiple employers?

Yes, through one of two routes. Most common is a Single Work Permit that explicitly lists multiple locations and employers under a primary sponsor — this is the BOI- and ML-endorsed approach. Less common is holding separate WPs under different sponsors, which requires careful Immigration coordination. The vast majority of foreigners in Thailand hold and renew just one Single WP.
