Apostille corridor & MOFA Korea workflow
South Korea acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 14 October 2006, entering force 14 July 2007. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 (in force for Thailand 28 February 2027) with Apostille enforceable 25 January 2025. The corridor is bidirectional single-leg: MOFA Korea (Seoul, Sejong) issues Apostilles on Korean documents at KRW 1,000 per document (~THB 26); MFA Chaeng Wattana issues Apostilles on Thai documents at THB 200 (original) or THB 400 (translation). Embassy of Korea Bangkok and Royal Thai Embassy Seoul no longer perform legalization for inter-state purposes.
MOFA Korea Apostille procedure: documents issued by Korean authorities (Family Relation Certificate Gajok Gwangye Jeungmyeongseo, Marriage Certificate Honin Gwangye Jeungmyeongseo, university Diploma/Transcript) are Apostilled at MOFA's Apostille service desk (Sejong Government Complex) or via the online e-Apostille portal (apostille.go.kr). Processing: 1-3 business days. Korean diplomas require prior verification by the issuing university's registrar and stamp from Ministry of Education before Apostille — NYC partner agents in Seoul handle this 3-step chain in 7-10 business days.
F-6 Marriage Migrant visa pipeline
F-6 Marriage Migrant visa allows a Thai spouse to live and work in South Korea without occupational restriction, leading to F-5 PR eligibility after 2 continuous years of marriage residence. Application via Korea Immigration Service (KIS) through HiKorea online portal (hikorea.go.kr) or in person at regional Immigration Offices. Visa fee KRW 60,000 (~THB 1,560). Processing: 2-4 weeks after Korean spouse income verification.
F-6 income/housing thresholds (2026): Korean spouse must demonstrate annual income ≥ KRW 19,267,290 (~THB 500,000) for 2-person household, plus stable housing (Jeonse rent deposit ≥ KRW 50 million OR home ownership). Required Thai documents (all Apostilled by MFA): Marriage Certificate (Kor.Ror.3) + sworn EN translation, Birth Certificate + EN translation, Single Status Affidavit prior to marriage + EN translation, Royal Thai Police Clearance + EN translation (valid 3 months), Household Registration + EN translation. Korean side: spouse's Resident Registration Card, Family Relation Certificate, tax records × 3 years, housing contract or property deed, Korean-language Plan for Married Life.
E-7 Specially Designated Activities & 86 occupations
E-7 covers 86 designated occupations across IT (developers, AI engineers, data scientists), engineering (mechanical, electrical, biomedical), finance (analysts, fund managers), language instruction (university lecturers, not K-12), R&D, and traditional cooking. The 2024 expansion added Korean Language Teacher (E-7-1) and Aerospace Engineer. Requires: bachelor's degree relevant to occupation OR 5+ years experience equivalent, employment contract with Korean company, minimum annual salary 80% of GNI per capita (KRW 33.6 million for 2026, ~THB 870,000). Visa fee KRW 80,000. Initial visa 1-3 years, renewable.
KCUE (Korean Council for University Education) verification: ALL foreign degrees used for E-7 or D-2 require KCUE academic verification via kcue.or.kr/eng before Immigration accepts the dossier. Required: Apostilled diploma + sworn EN translation, Apostilled transcript + EN translation, university registrar contact for KCUE verification email confirmation. Fee KRW 50,000-100,000. Processing 2-4 weeks (KCUE contacts the issuing university directly). D-2 Student visa covers degree-seeking programs at KCUE-accredited Korean universities: D-2-1 Associate, D-2-2 Bachelor, D-2-3 Master, D-2-4 PhD, D-2-5 Research, D-2-6 Exchange. Korean university issues Standard Admission Letter and Certificate of Admission; Thai student submits at Embassy of Korea Bangkok with Apostilled academic credentials, financial proof (USD 20,000 in bank for full-year tuition+living, or scholarship letter), TOPIK level 3+ (Korean-language programs) or IELTS 5.5+ (English-medium). Visa fee KRW 60,000. Processing 5-10 business days.
D-10 Job-Seeking visa: after D-2 graduation, students can switch to D-10 (6 months, extendable to 2 years total) to find E-7 employment. D-10 requires: bachelor's degree from Korean university OR foreign degree with KCUE verification + TOPIK 4 OR IELTS 6.0+, financial proof USD 5,000+ bank balance. Korea also offers F-2-7 Points-Based Long-Term Residence (after 1+ year on E-7/D-10 with 80+ points across age/education/income/Korean language/employment criteria) leading to F-5 PR in 5 years.
