Why Germany no longer needs Embassy Bangkok attestation
Germany acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on 13 February 1966. With Thailand's accession entering into force on 28 February 2027, the bilateral corridor will become fully Apostille-based. The German Embassy in Bangkok stopped accepting Thai public documents for legalisation on the same date — every Standesamt, Ausländerbehörde, ZAB, and Landgericht in Germany now treats a Thai MFA Apostille as the sole and final authentication.
What did not change is Germany's strict translation rule: every Thai document must be accompanied by a German translation prepared by a court-sworn translator (vereidigter / beeidigter Übersetzer) registered in the federal justice portal at justiz-dolmetscher.de. Translations prepared in Thailand by a Thai sworn translator are not accepted by Standesamt offices — only translators sworn before a German Landgericht qualify.
Standesamt marriage pack — the canonical four-document set
A Thai national marrying a German citizen at a Standesamt files a pack of four documents: (1) Thai birth certificate, (2) single-status affidavit (Ledigkeitsbescheinigung) issued by the Amphur or Khet office within the last 6 months, (3) Royal Thai Police clearance certificate within the last 6 months, (4) certified copy of the Thai national ID and house registration (Tabien Baan).
End-to-end cost on the four-document pack: Thai-side translation + notarisation THB 4,000 + MFA Apostille THB 3,200 + German sworn translation (in Germany or via NYC's Berlin partner) EUR 280–360 + handling THB 1,500 = approximately THB 22,000 all-in, closed in 9–12 business days before the Standesamt's Anmeldung der Eheschließung appointment.
ZAB degree recognition for regulated professions
Doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, lawyers, and architects must clear ZAB (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen) recognition via the anabin database before practising in Germany. The Thai-side pack: original degree certificate, Thai transcript with grading scale, syllabus/curriculum description, and a thesis abstract — every page Apostilled at MFA Chaeng Wattana and accompanied by a sworn German translation.
ZAB's adjudication timeline is 3–4 months after a complete filing. NYC closes the Thai-side documentary work in 10–14 business days. Cost: translation THB 8,000–12,000 + MFA Apostille (4 docs × THB 800) + sworn German translation EUR 600–900 + handling THB 2,500.
Familienzusammenführung — the family-reunification visa workflow
After Standesamt registration the Thai spouse files a Familienzusammenführung National Visa (D-Visa) at the German Embassy Bangkok via the Goethe-Institut appointment portal. Prerequisites: A1 German language certificate (Goethe-Institut Bangkok, exam fee THB 4,500), marriage certificate Apostilled in Germany after Standesamt registration, German spouse's income proof (Meldebescheinigung + 3 months Gehaltsabrechnung), and Krankenversicherungsnachweis.
Typical adjudication is 6–10 weeks. NYC coordinates the document pack including the post-Standesamt German marriage certificate Apostille (Landgericht / Regierungspräsidium) for use back in Thailand if the couple later registers the marriage at the Bangkok Amphur — handling fee EUR 180 plus authority fee.
