Frequently asked questions
Is a same-sex marriage registered abroad accepted?
Yes. Thailand's Marriage Equality Act took effect on 22 January 2025, so same-sex spouses are treated the same as opposite-sex spouses. A foreign marriage certificate must be legalised in the country of issue and submitted with a certified Thai or English translation when you file the dependent application.
Can children attend Thai schools?
Yes, dependants may enrol in Thai public schools, Thai private schools, or international schools. Most LTR families choose international curricula, where tuition commonly ranges from about THB 200,000 to 800,000 per year depending on the school, city, and grade level chosen.
Can my spouse work in Thailand?
A spouse holding an LTR Dependent visa can also obtain the Digital Work Permit, but it is limited to the employer named on that permit. Working for a different Thai employer requires a fresh work permit application through the One Stop Service Center, with BOI notified of the change.
What if I have more than 4 dependents?
BOI caps dependants at four per principal. Additional children must apply under a different category, typically a Non-Immigrant ED visa for study or a Non-O family visa. Those routes carry their own document requirements and annual extensions, separate from the ten-year LTR.
What if a child turns 20 during the visa?
Dependent eligibility ends when the child reaches 20, so plan three to six months ahead. Options include switching to a Non-Immigrant ED student visa, qualifying for an LTR as a principal in their own right, or moving to another suitable Non-Immigrant category before the status lapses.
