Thai-foreign marriage starts with an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry at the foreign spouse's embassy → certified translation → MFA → district office filing. Each nationality has a slightly different sequence — we know them all.
Thai-US case: Affidavit of Marital Status notarised at US Embassy → Thai translation → MFA → district office in 5-7 business days. We pre-book US Embassy slots to shave two weeks off the queue.
Post-registration name and title changes must be filed at the district office, then updated on the Thai passport, then notified to the foreign spouse's embassy — often forgotten.
End-to-end registration package from THB 15,000-25,000 covering affirmation, translation, MFA, and escort at the district office.
Thai registration is far faster than Germany (2-3 months) or Japan (1-2 months) — typically 1-2 weeks with prepared documents.
Under the Thai Civil and Commercial Code, marriage is created by registration at any District Office (Amphur). The ceremony at a temple, church or resort is culturally meaningful but has no legal effect on its own. To register, both parties present passports, an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry from their embassy (translated into Thai and MFA-legalised), and, where applicable, divorce or death certificates for prior marriages. The registrar then issues the Kor Ror 2 (marriage registration acknowledgment) and Kor Ror 3 (marriage certificate).
Every embassy issues this document under its own procedure. US and Australian embassies use a sworn statement notarised at the consular section (~USD 50). UK requires a Certificate of No Impediment issued after 7 days’ notice at a UK registrar or at the British Embassy Bangkok. Japan, Korea and Germany require a Family Registry / Ehefähigkeitszeugnis originating in the home country. For each embassy we know the exact appointment cadence, current fees and any recent form changes; this saves clients an average of 10 days over doing it themselves.
The Kor Ror 3 marriage certificate is in Thai only. To use it abroad you need a certified translation into English (or the destination language), MFA legalisation, and — depending on destination — Apostille (since Jan 2025) or attestation by the destination embassy in Bangkok. Common use-cases: US spouse-visa CR-1/IR-1, UK settlement visa, EU family reunification, GCC dependent visas, changing the wife’s surname in home-country records.
A Thai marriage triggers automatic community-property regime unless a prenuptial agreement was filed with the registrar at the moment of registration. For foreign spouses this is significant: assets acquired during marriage are presumed jointly owned. It also unlocks Non-Immigrant O visa based on Thai spouse, eventual Permanent Residence pathway, and shifts inheritance rules for Thai-situs assets. Our lawyers walk couples through each consequence before registration, not after.
For most nationalities we can complete: (1) embassy affirmation appointment, (2) MFA legalisation, (3) Thai translation, (4) Amphur registration and issuance of Kor Ror 2/3, and (5) English-language certified translation of the marriage certificate — inside a single business week. We book the Amphur slot, escort both parties on the day, and provide a signed English-language pack ready for use in the destination country.
Thai law recognises prenuptial agreements only if they are (a) in writing, (b) signed by both parties in the presence of two witnesses, and (c) registered together with the marriage at the same Amphur on the same day. A prenup drafted afterwards has no effect against third parties. For couples with pre-marital assets, business interests or children from prior relationships this is worth doing properly. We draft dual-language prenups (Thai + English) and file them at the Amphur ourselves.
