Thai Driving Licence
A Thai driving licence is issued by a registrar of the Department of Land Transport under the Motor Vehicle Act B.E. 2522. To use it abroad — to exchange it for a local licence or to support a car rental — most destinations require a translation and the level of certification they specify.
A Thai driving licence is an official document showing the vehicle classes the holder may drive, the issue and expiry dates, the licence number and the national ID number. A destination authority reads three things: who the holder is, what they are licensed to drive, and whether the licence is still valid. If a translation blurs any of those, the file stalls at the counter.
The common confusion is between a driving licence and an international driving permit. The first is the right to drive in Thailand under Thai law. The second is a permit in the form set out in the road traffic conventions, issued to a holder of a valid Thai licence, and it is always used together with the Thai licence — never as a substitute for it.
Whether a Thai licence can be exchanged for a local one is entirely a matter of the destination country's own law. Some jurisdictions exchange without a test, some waive only the theory test, and some do not exchange at all. If the licence is lost, damaged or expired, deal with the registrar first, before translation and legalisation. Notarial and consular certification attests to the document presented; it does not restore validity to an expired licence.

- The holder's passport, used to match the spelling of the name in the translation
- A Thai national ID card or other government-issued identification
- A driving-record certificate from the Department of Land Transport registrar, where the destination requires one
- A translation into the language the destination specifies, signed by the translator who takes responsibility for it
Step order
- Confirm the licence is unexpired and the vehicle classes match what you intend to drive abroad
- Request a driving-record certificate from the registrar if the destination asks for one
- Have the licence and supporting papers translated by a translator who signs for the translation
- Add certification by a Notarial Services Attorney where the destination requires notarised form
- File for legalisation at the Department of Consular Affairs where state-level certification is required
- Legalise at the destination country's embassy or consulate, or obtain an apostille once the Convention is in force for Thailand

- All vehicle classes and endorsements are carried across, none dropped
- Issue and expiry dates match the original and the licence is valid on the filing date
- Copies of both sides are legible, including the licence number

Practical tips
- Photograph both sides of the licence before the original leaves the country, in case it is lost in transit
- If you have changed your name, always bring the change-of-name certificate with its translation
- Ask the destination whether English is accepted or the national language is mandatory, so nothing is translated twice
- If you must drive while an exchange application is pending, carry an international driving permit together with the Thai licence

- Translating only the front while the destination also needs the conditions printed on the back
- Carrying the international permit alone without the Thai licence it depends on
- Spelling the name from the ID card rather than the passport, so the file is internally inconsistent

Can I drive abroad on a Thai licence alone?
It depends on the destination's law. Many countries allow temporary driving when the Thai licence is carried together with an international driving permit in the road-traffic-convention format; others require exchange for a local licence within a set period. Check with the destination's traffic authority before you travel.
Which language should the licence be translated into?
Whatever the destination specifies. English is accepted in most places, but some countries require their own official language. When in doubt, follow the written instruction of the office that will receive the file.
My licence was lost before the trip. What now?
Obtain a replacement from the Department of Land Transport registrar first, then put the replacement through translation and legalisation. Certification cannot substitute for a missing licence.
Can an expired licence still be translated and legalised?
Technically a copy can be translated and certified, but almost every receiving authority looks at validity, so renew with the registrar first rather than lose a cycle.
Is embassy legalisation always required?
It depends on the destination. Some rental desks accept a translation only, while licence exchange or official filings usually need Department of Consular Affairs legalisation plus embassy certification — replaced by an apostille once the Convention is in force for Thailand and the destination is a party.
Can you guarantee the exchange will be approved?
