Quick answer

Legalising a Thai marriage record covers both Kor Ror 2 (marriage certificate) and Kor Ror 3 (marriage register): translation with notarial certification, MFA authentication, then destination-embassy legalisation — typically 5-7 business days. Apostille becomes available for Thai documents on 28 February 2027 (source: HCCH).

Why Kor Ror 2 alone is not enough

Most destination authorities — USCIS, UKVI, German Standesamt — demand BOTH Kor Ror 2 (certificate) and Kor Ror 3 (register). Kor Ror 3 lists nationality, witnesses, prenuptial agreements, and any divorces, so it is the primary record. NYC translates and Apostilles both in one package.

Spouse-visa filings

US IR-1/CR-1 (INA §204(a)), UK Spouse Visa (Appendix FM-SE §26), Australia Partner 820/309 (Sch 2 §820.211), German AufenthG §28, Japan Spouse of Japanese National — all require an Apostille of the Thai marriage record.

Name-change flows overseas

US: attach Apostille marriage certificate to SSA Form SS-5, DMV licence, DS-5504 passport update. UK: file with Deed Poll. Germany: notify Standesamt under PStG §5. NYC issues certified translations aligned with each agency's template.

Inheritance and social security

US Social Security Survivors Benefits, UK State Pension Married Person's Rate, EU Regulation 883/2004 — all rely on an Apostille marriage certificate to prove spousal status. Cross-border marriages exceeding 10 years benefit from a full document set on file.

Marriage Equality Act 2025

Thailand's Civil and Commercial Code amendment on marriage equality took effect on 22 January 2025. Same-sex couples receive identical Kor Ror 2/3 documents; Apostille is accepted in 30+ jurisdictions recognising same-sex marriage. In non-recognising countries the document may be treated as a civil partnership.

How it works

  1. 1. Scan both Kor Ror 2 and Kor Ror 3

Missing copies can be re-issued at any district office — Kor Ror 2 free, Kor Ror 3 THB 20.

  2. 2. English translation + notarial certification

Names of both spouses, date, place of registration, and nationality translated to the MFA-compliant template.

  3. 3. MFA authentication

Consular Department verifies the notarial signature — 2-3 business days.

  4. 4. Apostille

MFA attaches the Apostille certificate to the originals and translations.

  5. 5. Delivery

Colour PDF plus EMS/DHL dispatch worldwide.

FAQ

Registered in a different district — still Apostille?

Yes. Since 2017 the central registration system lets you obtain a certified Kor Ror 3 duplicate at any district registrar in Thailand, so there is no need to return to the office where the marriage was registered. That certified duplicate then goes forward for translation and Apostille as normal.

Can I Apostille after divorce?

Yes. The original marriage certificate remains valid evidence of a past fact and is often required to prove the duration of the marriage, for example under the United States ten-year rule for spousal benefits. In practice you should submit the divorce registration alongside it.

Marriages before Thailand joined Hague?

Yes. An Apostille authenticates the signature and seal of the official who issued the document, not the date of the underlying event. A marriage registered long before Thailand acceded to the Hague Convention can therefore be apostilled in exactly the same way as a recent one.

Same-sex marriages?

Yes, since the Marriage Equality Act came into force on 22 January 2025. A same-sex marriage certificate is an ordinary Thai civil document, so it follows the identical legalisation chain and is accepted in any destination country that recognises same-sex marriage.

How long is the Apostille valid?

The Apostille itself never expires, but receiving authorities normally accept one issued within the last 6-12 months, and immigration files are usually the strictest. Because the certificate is tied to the underlying document, a fresh extract plus a new Apostille is the safer route when a filing deadline is months away.
