Apostille is the only Thai-side step
Australia has been a Hague Apostille Convention party since 1995. With Thailand's accession effective 28 February 2027, the Royal Thai Embassy Canberra and the Consulate-General in Sydney will stop accepting Thai public documents for consular legalisation. A Thai MFA Apostille is the sole and final Thai-side authentication accepted by every Australian authority: Department of Home Affairs (DHA), DFAT, AHPRA, VETASSESS, Engineers Australia, state Births Deaths and Marriages (BDM) registries, and Family Courts.
Conversely, Australian public documents destined for Thai use receive an Apostille from DFAT under the same Convention — no further Thai Embassy step is required from 28 February 2027. This is symmetric and reduces typical corridor time from 14 days to 5.
NAATI Certified Translator (CPN) — the non-negotiable
Every Australian receiving authority requires translations done by a NAATI Certified Translator whose Certification Practice Number (CPN) is current at the date of the translation. The translator's stamp must include the CPN, the direction (THA→ENG), the level (Certified Translator), and the date. Translations without a current CPN stamp are rejected on receipt — DHA, AHPRA, and VETASSESS verify CPN in the public NAATI online directory before accepting any document.

AHPRA registration — nursing and medical professionals
Thai-trained nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and allied health professionals registering with AHPRA submit: (1) Thai Medical/Nursing Council registration certificate (NAATI-translated + Apostilled), (2) academic degree and transcripts (NAATI + Apostilled), (3) IELTS Academic 7.0 each band or OET B in each section, (4) criminal record check from every country lived in for 6+ months in the last 10 years (NAATI + Apostilled where applicable), (5) AHPRA forms and CV.

VETASSESS skills assessment and 189/190/491 visas
Skilled migration visas (subclass 189 Independent, 190 State-Nominated, 491 Regional) require a positive skills assessment from VETASSESS (for most ANZSCO 1, 2, 3, 4 categories), Engineers Australia (engineers), or CPA Australia (accountants). VETASSESS documentary requirements: Apostilled academic credentials (NAATI-translated), Apostilled employment references covering the qualifying period, payslips/tax records, and CV.
