Spain Document Legalisation Corridor 2026: Thai MFA Apostille, Traductor Jurado, NIE & Registro Civil

Spain is Hague Apostille since 1978; with Thailand acceding 28 February 2027 the Spanish Embassy Bangkok will no longer legalise Thai documents. Every translation must be done by a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado appointed by the MAEC.

Apostille is the only Thai-side step

Spain has been party to the Hague Apostille Convention since 25 September 1978. After Thailand's accession on 28 February 2027, the Spanish Embassy in Bangkok (Calle Lake Ratchada, Sathorn) will cease all Thai-document legalisation. A Thai MFA Apostille — issued by the Department of Consular Affairs, Chaeng Wattana — is the sole and final Thai-side authentication accepted by every Spanish authority: Registro Civil Central, Subdelegación del Gobierno (NIE/TIE), Ministerio de Universidades (Homologación), Notarios, and Audiencia Nacional.

Reverse direction: Spanish public documents destined for Thai use carry an Apostille from the Ministerio de Justicia (for judicial documents) or the Colegio Notarial (for notarised documents). The Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid no longer attests Spanish documents either.

Traductor-Intérprete Jurado del MAEC — non-negotiable

Every Thai document used in Spain must be translated by a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado appointed by the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación (MAEC). The translator's number appears on the MAEC public roster (Oficina de Interpretación de Lenguas). The sworn translation carries the translator's stamp, signature, and a Certificación stating the translation is faithful — required to be on consecutive pages with the source copy bound in.

Translations produced in Thailand — even MFA-stamped — are not accepted by Registro Civil, notarios, or Subdelegaciones. NIE / TIE and the Subdelegación filing

A Thai national obtains the Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) by filing form EX-15 at a Spanish consulate abroad or at the Oficina de Extranjería of the relevant Subdelegación del Gobierno once in Spain. Supporting documents: Apostilled passport copy + Apostilled criminal record + sworn Spanish translation of the criminal record + Modelo 790 código 012 tasa (€9.84) + justification of cause (work contract, study admission, family reunification).

After arrival, the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is issued at the Oficina de Extranjería upon biometric capture, valid for the duration of the residence permit. NYC's NIE/TIE package: document audit + Apostille + jurada + Modelo 790 + appointment booking via the cita previa portal. Standard turnaround 10–15 business days for the Thai-side workflow.

Registro Civil Central transcription and Homologación

Thai marriages, births, and deaths involving a Spanish citizen transcribe at the Registro Civil Central, Calle Montera 18, Madrid (or by a competent Consulado for non-Spanish-resident citizens). Documents required: Apostilled Thai certificate + sworn Spanish translation + Apostilled birth certificate of the Spanish party + DNI + libro de familia request. Transcription time 3–9 months depending on Madrid backlog.

Academic Homologación for regulated professions (medicine, nursing, architecture, engineering, law) is filed with the Ministerio de Universidades. Required: Apostilled diploma + Apostilled transcript + sworn Spanish translation + plan de estudios + CV. Equivalencia is the parallel procedure for non-regulated degrees and is faster (6–9 months) than Homologación (12–24 months).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Thai sworn translation replace a Traductor Jurado?

No. Spain's Real Decreto 724/2020 mandates that sworn translations for official use be done by a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado listed on the MAEC roster. Thai MoJ-sworn or MFA-stamped translations are accepted only as informational; the binding translation must be produced in Spain (or by a Spanish-consular jurado abroad).

How long is a Thai criminal record valid in Spain?

Three months from the date of issuance for NIE, residency, and nationality applications. NYC schedules the criminal record to be issued, Apostilled, and jurada-translated within a 30-day window so that the full freshness margin is preserved upon Subdelegación filing.

Cost of a typical NIE + TIE package?

Thai side: criminal record + Apostille + MFA = THB 3,500. Spain side: Traductor Jurado for criminal record + passport translation = €120–180. Spanish administrative fees: Modelo 790 (€9.84) + TIE (€15.45). Total approximately €350–450 closed in 10–15 business days.

Is Homologación required to work as a nurse in Spain?

Yes. The Ministerio de Sanidad requires Homologación of the Thai nursing degree (Diplomatura/Grado equivalent), Apostilled academic transcript with sworn translation, EU-language proficiency (B2 Spanish), and registration with the autonomous community Colegio de Enfermería. NYC handles the Thai-side workflow and partners with a Madrid Homologación consultancy for the Spanish-side filing.

Can a Power of Attorney be signed at the Spanish Embassy Bangkok?

Yes, the Sección Consular of the Spanish Embassy retains its notarial function for poderes notariales used in Spain. The PoA is signed before the Cónsul (€60), receives the embassy's signature on a Spanish-language formula, and is forwarded directly to the Spanish notary or Registro de la Propiedad. No further Apostille is required.

Does Cataluña have separate requirements?

Cataluña accepts MAEC-jurada translations but also recognises Traductors Jurats appointed by the Generalitat de Catalunya for Catalan-language documents. For Thai-source documents destined for Barcelona civil registry or property registries, the MAEC jurada (Castilian) is universally accepted.
